Tech Transfer - University of Michigan

Fueling Economic Development

Resources for Students

UM Tech Transfer has invested considerable time and talent in establishing an effective and well-respected technology transfer operation. It has done this in part by enlisting the assistance of the Ann Arbor community. By working diligently to create and foster a climate of entrepreneurism in Ann Arbor, UM Tech Transfer, and others, have seen a dramatic growth not only in available venture capital resources over the past decade, but in potential start-up management personnel and infrastructure organizations dedicated to helping new high-tech companies flourish. As a community interested in economic development, entrepreneurism and technology transfer grows, the process of getting technology out of the lab and into the world becomes more fluid.

In this process, UM Tech Transfer has found that there exists no better local resource than the students at the University of Michigan. From PhD students in Electrical Engineering to MBAs, from Med School post docs to School of Information graduate students, UM Tech Transfer has continued to expand its use of student resources over the course of the past several years with great success.

Students have helped us to analyze technology attributes and assess market needs, to seek out potential commercialization partners and to accelerate the business formation process in the case of local start-ups. Student interns have done market research and competitive analysis. They have written business plans and developed market entry strategies. They have created prospectuses for attracting venture capital funding. They have aided in the recruitment of key personnel. Interns have also worked on web development projects for the Office of Technology Transfer and they have assisted in various projects in cooperation with local organizations such as the Ann Arbor IT Zone and the Washtenaw Development Council.

Students have conducted this work through several venues: Business School class projects, independent study projects and business development internships that team students with scientists and entrepreneurs. We have year-round opportunities, however, our primary internship opportunity is the TechStart Internship Program, which runs each year between mid-May and mid-August.

Please review current and previous internship projects and look at what past interns have to say about their experience. If you are interested in pursuing an intern opportunity, please contact Mark Maynard.
